Short version: your file is read in your own browser. We never receive it, and we do not ask you to make an account. The one exception is if you choose street addresses, explained below.

GeographicStudy (geographicstudy.com) is run by SHORE AI LLC in Malibu, California. This page explains what happens to information when you use the site.

Your file

When you choose a file, it is opened and read by your browser, on your computer. The names, addresses, amounts and anything else inside it are not uploaded to our server and are not stored by us. When you close the page, it is gone.

What our server does receive

To draw the map, the page asks our server for the outlines of the states, counties or ZIP codes in your file. That request carries only those place codes or state abbreviations. It carries no names and no amounts. Our server passes the request on to the U.S. Census Bureau and sends the outlines back. We do not log or store the list of places.

Services that see your visit

• U.S. Census Bureau. Receives the place codes needed to find the outlines. It sees our server's address, not yours.
• U.S. Census Bureau address finder. Used only if you choose "Street addresses" as the place column. Those addresses (no amounts, no names) pass through our server to the Census Bureau to be found on the map. We do not store or log them. You are told before this happens, and pressing "Make my map" is your okay.
• Google Sheets. Used only if you paste a Google Sheets link instead of dropping in a file. Our server fetches the sheet from Google and passes it straight back to your browser. We do not store or log it.
• Mapbox. The street map behind your shading is loaded from Mapbox, so it can see which part of the map you are looking at. You can turn the street map off.
• Google Fonts. The page fonts are loaded from Google.
• Analytics. We use Google Analytics and Plausible to count visits and see which pages are used. They may use cookies or similar technology. We do not use them for advertising.
• Formspree. If you use the contact form, your name, email, phone (if you give it) and message are sent through Formspree to us.

Selling and sharing

We do not sell your information. We share it only with the services above to run the site, or if the law requires it.

Your choices

You can block cookies in your browser. If you wrote to us and want your message deleted, email info@geographicstudy.com. The site is not meant for children under 13.
